Tightrope act

The circus was his life. He was born to be a clown. His feet were large enough that he didn't need the special clown shoes. The words to the song played over in his head.

Oh, I am the laugh man
Half clown and half man
Half out and half in, oh mister can't you see?
I'm s'posed to leave you laughing, so why don't you laugh at me?

But he knew that he's been faking it all along. Would they all now catch on. He was no longer a kid, the clown act wasn't working anymore, he was now walking the tightrope.

Oh, he had walked it plenty of time before, but then the netting was new and strong. One of these days the net would not support him. He was too old to keep up the clown act.

I am the guy who always catches the pie
I specialize in pratfalls
I am the goon who flashes the moon
A mouse in a house of catcalls

I'm your jester your juggler
Your joker your friend
I'm nothing more or less
Than a horse's nether end!

He was beginning to believe the words.

Now he was above the circus. Below him a pool of sharks. He had always been able to outsmart the sharks, but he feared that he no longer was capable of doing so. He had no choice, his legs quivered, his hands shook, but there was no pension and nobody laughed at an old clown.

So he would walk that tightrope again, and if that worked, maybe he'd stick his head in the Lion's mouth.

Amazing and touching! Incredibly touching.

I am reminded of Henry Miller's wonderful book, The Smile at the Foot of the Ladder.

It is a metaphor for us all, as we grow and find our true selves, uncover and meet our true strength.

You captured something beautiful and gave us a lovely peek into ourselves and into you.

I am deeply touched.

I am hearing conversations now on baseball. My mailman was delighted to talk to me for an hour about the pitchers for the Yankees. It must be time to "play ball."
