I confess, I am a Liberal

A couple of years ago, on a whim,  I went to see George McGovern at a book signing.

George McGovern, the Democratic nominee for President in 1972, was called  a Pacifist.  He stated that he was never a Pacifist, he just never felt that there was a war worth fighting since World War II.  He, in fact, was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross in World War II.  His illustrious military career is the subject of Stephen E.Ambrose's book
The Wild Blue.

In recent years he has among other things been involved in Nutrition Programs and National School Lunch Program.   This is a very good man.   He is also generally considered a Liberal.

Why has Liberal become a dirty word?  I consider myself a Liberal.  I don't necessarily believe in limited government. I think there are times when the government should protect us from ourselves.

I think that before the government screwed them up, social services like Medicare and Medicaid were great programs.

I think that it's necessary to legislate to protect the environment, to limit access to guns. But I also believe that if you use a gun in a crime the penalty should be mandatory and strict. Not the death penalty.

I am pro choice.  It just would never be my choice.

I am a card carrying member of the American Civil Liberties Union.  Why not?  Their mission of the ACLU, taken directly from their website is:

The mission of the ACLU is to preserve all of these protections and guarantees:

  • Your First Amendment rights - freedom of speech, association and assembly; freedom of the press, and freedom of religion.
  • Your right to equal protection under the law - equal treatment regardless of race, sex, religion or national origin.
  • Your right to due process - fair treatment by the government whenever the loss of your liberty or property is at stake.
  • Your right to privacy - freedom from unwarranted government intrusion into your personal and private affairs.
I think that the act of burning a flag is reprehensible,  but it is protected speech.  There should not be a constitutional amendment banning the act.   In fact there has only been one constitutional amendment limiting individuals rights.  That was prohibition, which was repealed.

I think Gays should have the same rights to marry as heterosexuals.  I don't know why anybody would oppose this.  I know who it helps.  I can't figure out who it hurts. as a heterosexual I am not in the least bit affected by two men or two women who want to marry each other.

I'm in favor of stem cell research.

I don't believe in prayer in the public schools.

I don't believe that we should have ever gone into Iraq.

Now if this makes me evil, so be it.

Liberals aren't evil. They have been getting a bad rap lately because too many are snobs. This group will lash out at anyone who isn't a liberal (which would mean me - and yes, this has happened on numerous occasions) and are completely incapable of having a political conversation with someone who disagrees with them. They disdain on anyone who believes in religion and have no respect for others opinions. They simply want to preach to the choir.

I have some liberal friends who aren't of this ilk, mind you. They tolerate me and my conservative views (mainly, I think, bc I'm a social liberal - I am pro-choice and feel gays should have the right to get married and be as miserable as the rest of us - I also believe in capital punishment and as little government as possible). Of course, with this said, we never discuss politics. They aren't capable of it without getting upset and annoyed that I don't get upset. We stick to the other topics (meaning sex, money, clothes, or interior design)

When William Buckley died Newsweek had a great article on him. He had a great ability to separate political viewpoints from personalities. He would disagree vehemently with someone and laugh with him a minute later.

He believed that politics should never interfere with friendships. It's a great attitude.

I couldn't agree with him more. Politics are irrelevant at the end of the day.

BTW, this isn't the case in Israel. Israeli liberals aren't anywhere near as snobbish (unless they are anglo).

The snobbish attitude is not limited to Liberals. Have you had the opportunity to listen to talk radio? Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Ann Coulter etc... these are dismissive and rude people. I'm sure that you objected to Coulter's view of a "perfect society." Angry Liberals and angry Conservatives should learn something from Buckley.

Ann Coulter isn't a conservative. She's a Nazi. There's a HUGE difference there. (IMHO that annorexic bitch should be shot, but hey, that's just me.)

I am against the death penalty, but in her case I'd make an exception.

I wrote a parody awhile back based on Dr. Seusses Yertle the Turtle called Coulter the Vulture. I've attached it if you're interested.

I certainly don't cry for them. There have been so many mistakes and abuse of the penalty. A few years ago, there was a study in Illinois commissioned by the Governor, who was at that time a proponent of the death penalty. This study concluded that a large percentage of those who have been put to death and are on death row, did not commit the crime. It's documented in a book by Scott Turow, He's a lawyer, author and a member of the panel.

That's why I say serial. Someone who has been convicted of the crime several times. It's a pity that we can't get them the first time around, but there has to be some sort of safeguard so we don't kill innocent people. I figure 3 charges and you're out.

As I've said, I'll never cry for them.
