My Religion

I am not very religious. I guess I could be considered a secular Jew. That being the case, I clearly identify myself as being Jewish and have pride in my Religion and Heritage.

Growing up my neighborhood basically had a line through it. The Jewish section and the Italian section. We only crossed that line when we wanted to be beaten up. My part of the neighborhood was so Jewish that when I heard Kennedy was the first Catholic President, I naturally assumed all the rest were Jewish.

I went to a private High School which was predominately Jewish. Even the only African American was named Irving.

When I went to college, again a predominately Jewish School, was the first time that I encountered blatant anti-Semitism. An alleged friend told me that I was the only Jew he liked. I responded with a barrage of insults that Groucho himself would have been proud of. I probably was the first that he ever met. Oddly enough he married a Jewish Girl. I guess she was the second Jew that he liked.

Between 1901 and 2007 more that 750 Noble Prizes have been handed out. Of those 162 have been to Jews. Thirteen of the One Hundred US Senators are Jewish. Thirty of the 435 Congressional Representatives are Jewish. Yet we comprise only .6% of the worlds population.

I’ll never be very Religious, but I’ll always be proud.
