If you can't remember who Chuck Colson was, he was counsel to Richard Nixon from 1969-1973. He pleaded guilty, and served seven months in prison, for obstruction of justice in the case of the break-in of the office of Daniel Ellsberg's psychiatrist.

Colson apparently found God in prison. (Who knew that he was there.) Since that time has been an advocate of many right wing christian causes. Colson also supported the passage of Proposition 8 and recently signed his name to a full-page ad in the New York Times accusing the GLBT community of "anti-religious bigotry" and trying to start a religious war.

The award is apparently the second highest award that can be given to a citizen by the President. Previous recipients included Hank Aaron, Archibald Cox and Robert Dole.

You can't make this stuff up.
